When they bite

Open March 1–Jan. 31; closed all of February. Trout move to deeper, warmer water like bayous and creeks when it gets cold.

Where locally

Grass flats and drop-offs in the sounds and bays, and docks and creek mouths in winter.

Spots to try: Destin: East Pass & the harbor.

Gear basics

Local tip: Live shrimp under a popping cork is the easiest way for a beginner to catch trout.

The bite and location notes are general angler know-how, not a fishing report.
