When they bite

Open year-round. Locally, they're a warm-season fish and a pier favorite when the water warms in spring.

Where locally

Piers, passes and the beaches, wherever there are bait schools. Watch for birds diving.

Spots to try: Navarre Beach Fishing Pier, Pensacola Beach Gulf Pier, Okaloosa Island Pier (The Island Pier), Panama City Beach piers (M.B. Miller & Russell-Fields).

Gear basics

Local tip: Reel faster than feels natural. Spanish love a fast-moving lure.

The bite and location notes are general angler know-how, not a fishing report.
