Regulations
| Size | 16" total length (TL) minimum |
| Bag limit | 2 per person (counts toward the 10-snapper state aggregate) |
- Charter captain and crew: zero bag limit (FWC).
- Federally permitted for-hire boats follow a separate federal season (below). State-licensed charters without a federal permit fish the private season, in Florida Gulf state waters only.
- Reef fish gear rules apply: circle hooks with natural bait, a dehooking device, and a descending device or venting tool rigged and ready.
- Fishing from a private boat? You need the free State Reef Fish Angler designation (on top of your license) for this species. FWC

When they bite
The private-boat season is a patchwork in fall: daily in spells, then weekends and holidays. Always check the dates table before you run.
Where locally
Natural and artificial reefs and wrecks offshore of Pensacola, Navarre, Destin and Panama City. Most legal fish come from structure in deeper Gulf water, which means a boat or a charter.
Spots to try: Destin: East Pass & the harbor.
Gear basics
- Medium-heavy conventional or spinning outfit, 30–50 lb line
- Non-stainless, non-offset circle hooks with natural bait (required)
- Egg or bank sinker heavy enough to hold bottom
- Dehooking tool and a descending device (both required on board)
Local tip: Big females lay far more eggs than small ones. If you're releasing fish from depth, use the descending device; FWC says older, larger red snapper are key to the stock.
The bite and location notes are general angler know-how, not a fishing report.
