When they bite
FWC lists no closed season for Gulf state waters. Mahi are a warm-water offshore fish, so summer is prime time.
Where locally
Well offshore: weed lines, floating debris, temperature breaks and color changes.
Spots to try: Destin: East Pass & the harbor.
Gear basics
- Medium spinning or conventional outfit, 20–30 lb
- Trolled skirted ballyhoo or small lures
- Cut bait or live bait for a school that's hanging around the boat
- Gaff, and a big cooler
Local tip: Keep a hooked mahi in the water and the rest of the school usually stays with the boat.
The bite and location notes are general angler know-how, not a fishing report.
