When they bite
The 2026 Gulf season was Sept. 1–Oct. 13. Outside the season, AJs are catch-and-release only.
Where locally
Wrecks, rigs and big structure offshore. They're common bycatch when you're bottom fishing deeper reefs.
Spots to try: Destin: East Pass & the harbor.
Gear basics
- Heavy conventional outfit, 50–80 lb
- Live bait like blue runners or hardtails
- Strong circle hooks and heavy fluorocarbon leader
- A fighting belt helps: AJs are brutes
Local tip: Measure on a flat surface. 34" fork length is the line, and lots of AJs are just short.
The bite and location notes are general angler know-how, not a fishing report.
